Hawley Hits A Home Run At Dragonfire!

What a truly successful weekend we just had here at Dragonfire! With near perfect weather, a group of eager students of all levels, and an enthusiastic and seemingly tireless clinician in Hawley Bennett, Dragonfire kicked off the new season in a big way.

Hawley's action packed lessons kept the horses' feet moving and the rider's heads turning looking for the next task at hand. We were so EXTREMELY PROUD of all of our Dragonfire riders for representing us so well and showing Hawley what we are made of. We are also thrilled by the performance our baby three and four year old class gave....man- what a bunch of stars for the future! Having some of the wonderful riders from around our area come in and enjoy the Dragonfire facility was also a treat. Hawley was very complementary of all of those that participated in the clinic and she is eager to come back and see how we've improved in the future.

We had some much appreciated help over the weekend with the Deer Creek Pony Club providing jump crew and a snack bar on both days. Michael Votaw was our official electronics nerd at our dinner at Mikuni's and kept Hawley's videos of her rounds with Gin N Juice and Livingstone rolling while our giant party had a grand time eating sushi. And Ride On Video generously made a great movie to remember the weekend by.

Here is the second of our Guest Bloggers, Makena Graber. Makena started her riding career here with Melissa in The Academy @ Dragonfire and took her very first "official clinic" on a brand new horse for her, a green OTTB, "Mr. Chew". This is what Makena had to say about her weekend with Hawley:

Let me just start off by saying, what an AMAZINGweekend! The much anticipated HawleyBennett Clinic was a great success thanks to the generosity of Jenny and Earland the hard work of the riders and Hawley herself.

It wasn't until the first day of the clinic thatI started to get nervous. And this being my first clinic ever, it was a newexperience for me. I was very thankful that on the first day, I didn't rideuntil later in the afternoon, so I had time to watch the other riders and get afeel for what it was going to be like. Before I knew it, it was time to gofetch Mr. Chew from the pasture. Walking into the arena was like walking onto astage, there's this superstar standing there and a bunch of people are watchingeverything. Once we started the lesson, my nerves went away and my adrenalinekicked in. The jumps weren't too high, but the exercises were tough and it mademe realize how much I had to work on. One of the high points for me wasHawley's teaching style; very blunt and direct, yet positive and encouraging.We were all exhausted after the lesson was done, but we still had enough energyto head to Mikuni's just a few hours later.

At dinner, Hawley shared with us videos of herand her mare, Gin N' Juice, and her experiences on getting to work with such anincredible horse. Hearing Hawley's story inspired me a TON because it was soclose to mine: both being in Pony Club at age 15, Hawley doing her first event at 16 and I'mhoping to have my first event this summer. It just went on to show me that youdon't have to start riding when you're four years old to accomplish what Hawleyhas.

The second day of the clinic was probably myfavorite day of the two. We worked on many things the day before, but now itwas time to elaborate on those things and raise the bar, literally. The jumpswere noticably bigger and much, much scarier. With tires, trees, and boxesunderneath the jumps, the horses were definitely more looky. As for Mr. Chew,he LOVED it! The scarier and bigger, the better! As the lesson wore on, Hawleymade me realize what an amazing horse I was sitting on. It was because of hiswillingness that the lesson went so smoothly. By the end of the day everyonewas bushed, and ready to go home. It was an awesome weekend with barely anyhiccups, and for that I am grateful.

This was for sure the BEST first clinic a girlcould have! I am truly blessed to be around such amazing people and talentedhorses. Being taught by Hawley was an experience in itself, and I hope to havethe honor of being taught by her again someday. I am grateful to her for comingout and teaching us so many things, and to Jen and Earl for being hospitable toeveryone and providing the space and resources to make the clinic a reality. Itwas quite an experience to be had and I'm sure that it's not going to be thelast!

We recently hosted a wonderfully successful Hawley Bennett Clinic here at Dragonfire Farm in which I asked two of the participants to write about their personal experience. The first here for your reading pleasure is from Meghan Allen, a college student from Fresno who has just gotten into the great sport of Eventing. From Meghan:

Hey everyone,

I cannot even began to explain how excited I have been for thisclinic. I had been waiting for thisweekend for at least a month and finally it is here. I am also guilty ofbragging about being able to have a lesson with Hawley Bennett!

When I arrived at Dragonfire on Saturday morning everything wasset and the first group of girls were almost ready to ride. I still had last minute things to do likewash Oscar’s whites and clean tack. After the cleaning was done I sat on the berm to watch a fewgroups. One important aspect for me iswatching others perform. You can learn alot just by watching others ride. Istress that everyone takes time once and a while just to watch others.

Around 1:15 it was my group’s turn to have a lesson withHawley. I felt really good about my warmup, my leg was feeling very secure and my horse was on the bit. However, once we started our lesson we had aminor mishap in the grid that left me eating a little dirt. After that I had one of the best rides I haveever had on Oscar. Hawley was extremelyconstructive in her feed back while staying positive. Her teaching style really helped meunderstand exactly what I was doing right and what I needed to change in myride. My favorite part of the lesson wasthat Hawley kept the courses interesting and different. We never repeated a course more than once, weonly repeated certain parts that needed fine tuning.

Saturday night we all went to dinner at Mikunis. Great fun was had but, of course we were alleager to learn about Hawley. We watchedvideos of her on her mare, Gin and Juice. I could not get over how big the fences were out on the cross countrycourses she was jumping! And to thinkshe was jumping those fences on a small 15.3 mare!! One thing I learned is thatsize does not matter all that much if you have a horse that has clean footworkbecause footwork is key.

Sunday’s focus point was a course based off cross country likeaspects. Hawley set up things like acoffin, chevron, table and a house. Shealso incorporated a bounce, a tall vertical with tires under it and we evenjumped the christmas tree! I foundtoday’s lesson to be very beneficial since we took all our footwork exercisesfrom Saturday and utilized them in a course. From the outside looking in it might have seemed like an easy coursewith lots of time in between fences. However, Hawley set it up so that after a long gallop we had to reallycollect our horses otherwise we were in jeopardy of pulling arail.

Everyone put in beautiful rounds today and I believe this was alldo to the footwork we did in our lessons yesterday. I had a great weekend at the clinic and itwas definitely worth the long hours and lack of sleep. I want to thank Hawley Bennett for takingtime out of her busy schedule and sacrificing 75 degree weather for a brisk 60degrees. Also to Jen and Earl for supplyingeverything that was needed for this weekend and to Nancy Dein for takingpictures. The weekend went so smoothlyand it could not have happened without everyone’s positive attitudes.

Hawley helps Billy understand that Dressage happens whether you want it to or not

What a gift I have been given. I am blessed with a life that allows me to learn and grow on a daily basis surrounded by two and four legged friends and supporters. How many people can say that? The opportunity to build onto my foundation as a rider is what I relish, and I know that the opportunity only surfaces when you have a horse capable of taking you there and a dedicated team of coaches and family invested in your success. The gift, I believe, is the wisdom to finally appreciate this and enjoy the journey. For all of the times that I may not have fully appreciated my situation, I promise I am in FULL appreciation now and will squeeze every last drop of pleasure out of the road I am on.

Billy and I have an exciting few weeks ahead of us, which we kicked off with a double shot of private lessons with Hawley Bennett-Awad down at Galway Downs in Temecula, CA. This quick trip down involved an 18 hour round trip drive courtesy of Earl, for a total of an hour and a half of intense learning for me. I have been dealing with a minor injury that makes sitting excruciatingly painful, so my darling husband drove the whole way while I laid in the back of the truck. All of this on our twelve year wedding anniversary. We are such romantics!

This weekend we will be riding in our own Hawley Bennett clinic here at Dragonfire to work on the finer points of our show jumping and general good behavior. Earl and I will also be riding a few of our future stars in the clinic, something I know both of us are really looking forward to. Then it will be off to Galway again for our first Intermediate run. 2** look out...here comes Billy!!

Roger loving his jump training

We have been so thrilled with the way that our young Rouge et Blanc DF, aka Roger, has been developing. From the beginning we knew that this flashy boy by Dragonfire Kirin and out of A Buccaneer's Life (TB) was destined for greatness. As a yearling, he started to prove to the world that our breeding program had hit the mark when he scored an impressive 81.0% at the USEA Future Event Horse testing in Paso Robles. As a two year old, Roger was the Overall Two Year Old Champion at the USEA Future Event Horse in Fresno. Rouge et Blanc DF is truly a class act that embodies the modern day sport horse.

Now we eagerly await this striking chestnut's debut under saddle as a performance horse. His three year old training has gone very smoothly, and his interested and kind temperament keeps everyone heading to his stall first every day. To watch Roger in action, click here.

It was with great pleasure that we hosted our Jingle Bell Academy Show and Luncheon last week for our wonderful students here at Dragonfire. We were treated with a fabulous display of what our students have been learning in the Academy, as well as visiting with all of the supportive family members later in the lounge over a delicious lunch provided by Melissa. Not only that, we had absolutely PERFECT WEATHER, something that we have been dreaming about without much success in our Academy Show Series.

Those who have their own horse were decked out with holiday spirit and were festively turned out for the show. Kammy Bhala won the Best Dressed Award, along with a pair of wins in her flat class and pattern at our show.

Mia Bouslaugh has newly partnered with Masto for the season and the match is already drawing accolades with a win in their flat class. His quiet rhythm is perfect to showcase Mia's growing confidence and grace on a horse.

Winning the large Advanced Pattern class was Megan Watkins aboard Maggie. Megan did well to keep the pattern even and exact, which really impressed me since they had to perform a four loop serpentine including two canter loops and two trot loops with a halt at the end.

Ben Snyder was overwhelmed with his win after a strong performance in the Beginner Pattern aboard Aida. His enthusiastic acceptance of his prize was such a treat to watch, reminding all who were there that horses are so good for a child's soul.

Merissa Underwood and her zesty mare, Danny California absolutely dominated the November Ram Tap Horse Trials. Merissa seemingly was in no mood to take any prisoners in what was meant to be her final performance at the Training Level, and she started the weekend off in first place with a score of 27.3 in the Dressage. "9" is not a common score to receive in Eventing, but with a stunning go, Merissa and Danny were awarded two "9's" on their test. To watch their Dressage Test, click here. To hold their lead for the win, Merissa and Danny need only go fast and clear on Cross Country day, a task easier said than done especially with the pressure of starting off in first place. Luckily, this is by far both Danny and Merissa's favorite phase of the competition and they just smoked around the course without a moment of hesitation. In the end, Merissa gave the performance required to vindicate that she not only was the best in her class, but also had the best score of the entire Training Level division, as well as being named the Best Pony Club Performance of the show. Wow! Go Merissa and Danny... we are so proud of you two!

After a somewhat shaky first few Preliminary runs plagued with stops and slow times at the beginning of the year, Billy started to live up to his potential in May at the Preliminary Horse Challenge where he came in a very close second in deep competition. Tracy's mantra of "Go Billy GOOOO" must have been on repeat in his little brain because after that he kept the big boy pants on (which is great because I really, really hate diapers!!) and was giving pretty solid rounds across country. This gave a bit of confidence to shoot for the Galway Downs International CCI* in the Fall.

A well behaved first horse inspection

Although Billy is a beautiful Dressage horse at home and in lessons, his workmanlike demeanor unfortunately does NOT translate to the short white rails in competition. His enthusiasm for the next day's cross country run spills over into the day that is meant for decorum and graceful reservation making each movement, although generally contained, somewhat resistant. I was very proud of him here at Galway, where the atmosphere is definitely electric. He wasn't thrilled about the idea of leg yielding, and we dropped a counter canter, but all in all, he was mostly focused on the task at hand. I can only imagine that this part of our performance will improve as he is so talented and I am very determined to be creative and find that perfect warm up for him! I was very thankful that we had our Dressage on Thursday for many reasons. A.) Billy was already braided from the first horse inspection earlier that day. B.) I could work him a thousand times (give or take a few) for his Dressage test and he would have all of Friday to recover before his cross country run on Saturday. C.) And I am most grateful for riding on Thursday because it was gloriously sunny and warm, and Friday absolutely poured buckets of rain all day. I am sure it was disappointing for all of those West Coast foreigners (East Coasters, Canadians and Dutch) looking for some sunny California weather, as after Thursday it was pretty much miserably cold and wet.

The footing was a concern for cross country day due to the afore mentioned weather, but Galway is luckily in a river bed, so most of the way was sandy going with a very few muddy spots to deal with. Nevertheless, Earl put in very large studs for me while I was out on my final course walk before our run. Billy's warm up was exuberant as expected, and I spent as little time possible jumping and getting him wound up.

My mission for the cross country was to get right down to business and set a forward and positive tone for Billy. He is finally out of the hand holding stage (except for at ditches, of course!) and he was more than willing to stay in front of my leg and straight. It was a very, very, VERY (did I say VERYYY??) fun round. I was glad for all of the trot sets and aqua-tread for Billy, and the P90X workouts for me, when we came in 20 seconds early on the 8 minute course with hardly breaking a sweat. His recuperation was super quick and he had nary a nick on him. His double clear round moved us up to tied for 9th going into the second jog out. To watch Billy's cross country click here.

The second jog tends to produce a lot of anxiety in Event riders, since it is really no fun to do all of that work, pay all of that money, have an amazing round on Saturday and then not pass for Stadium. Luckily for me, the only thing I had to worry about was not getting drug by Billy down the jog lane and kicking anyone as we passed by in hyperdrive.

I had missed the bad weather all week long, but my dime was up on Sunday afternoon when I had Stadium in the pouring, and might I add, freezing rain. Billy was a trooper in the mud, and was up for the big, turning course. I was caught out early in the five stride, coming in big and not getting him back in time for the out costing us a rail. But, everything else was spot on and pretty much brilliant under the circumstances. It was the kind of week I live for, where all of the dedication and work pay off. I was surrounded by great help so that I felt at ease and could concentrate on the task at hand. Not only that, I had the support of all my friends and family at home and my great sponsors cheering me on. I grew as a rider and my horse grew as a competitor...and growth is what it is all about. But most of all, I came home with a confident, healthy and happy horse, and I can't wait to do it again (only higher!).

At the inaugural CIC at the Woodside Horse Park in Woodside, CA, High Times made his FEI debut with Earl McFall. Because of scheduling conflicts with the Morgan Grand National, it was Earl not Jennifer, that got to guide this handsome powerhouse around the CIC* course. The duo started out in fourth place after Dressage and remained there for the duration of the competition. The high placing finish is a credit to High Times' talent and Earl's ability to catch ride a horse he never gets to ride at home (sharing Billy doesn't happen much!).

At the recent Twin Rivers Horse Trials both Dragonfire trainers, Earl and Jennifer McFall, were featured on the cover of the program. What an honor! Of course, Andrea Baxter of Twin Rivers Ranch claims it was by total accident that two of the three pictures were of McFalls, as the pictures were favored by both the photographer and the printer and they had no idea of the relationship of the riders. But since we like to aim high, we are hoping that in the near future there will be THREE McFalls on featured on the cover! Taylor McFall made her eventing debut with her trusty steed, Roses Are Blue, at the 2011 Eventful Acres Juniors Over Jumps. In a field of much older and more experienced riders, Taylor navigated thru the sand box and both her stadium and cross country courses with the confidence of an old campaigner and came away with the a red ribbon in the end. Truly, this maybe the best McFall yet!

The Motherlode Morgan Show has been a staple in Northern California showing since what seems like the dawn of time. With the great staff and innovative ideas on how to keep this show strong, I image that it will continue where other shows have struggled and failed. We love taking advantage of the All Breed classes for our Non-Morgans, as well as the Academy/Opportunity classes for our first-time show riders. Sport Horse In Hand classes are also offered, and very well received with tons of entries. Typically we only bring 7 or 8 horses to a show, but because of the broad spectrum of classes offered at Motherlode, we brought 17 this time!! Keep up the good work guys, our exhibitors LOVE your show!

Stilwell Renaissance Man

For the second year in a row, ALB Morgans produced the Grand Champion Sport Horse Stallion, this year with Stilwell Renaissance Man. Shown by Earl McFall, "Manny" was up against some very stiff competition from the aged stallions, but this two year old colt has such a correct, rhythmical trot that he dazzled in the show ring. Also for the second year in a row, UVM Springfield is the sire of the Champion Stallion. He is certainly showing his ability to produce a consistent winner!

Manhattan Jubilee

Dragonfire Farm owns the Grand Champion Sport Horse Mare, Manhattan Jubilee. This stunning three year old mare is by Dragonfire Kirin and out of the great UVM Columbine. With parents like that, it is no surprise that she is smooth bodied, big moving and sharp as a tack. We expect "Jolie" to have an exceptional career in and out of the show ring.

Merriewold Kasey

Merriewold Morgans has been breeding top class Sport Morgans, and they have hit the mark again with Merriewold Kasey. At only three, he has already reached the 16 hand mark. Not only is he big, but this sleek chestnut has a trot that Dressage riders would kill for. Kasey has the makings of a real Dressage star. At his first performance in his career, Kasey was the Reserve Grand Champion Sport Horse Gelding.

Lovey of Stilwell

Despite the heat, Earl McFall had a beautifully expressive go in the Junior Western Pleasure Championship with Lovey of Stilwell to win the tricolor. Although she is just a three year old, Lovey looked as polished and stylish as any four year old could hope for. ALB Morgans bred and owns this adorable mare.

Merriewold JS Bach

Earl McFall dominated the Junior horse ranks, winning the Junior Hunter Pleasure Championship with Merriewold JS Bach. This young gelding has been wildly successful in his first year of competition, winning at every show he has made an appearance at. Combined with Kasey's success In Hand, it was a great show indeed for Merriewold Morgans.

Academy students gave strong performances all weekend, and provided Dragonfire with loads of rides to be proud of. Ava Votaw made her maiden performance in the Leadline with Roses Are Blue, waving to the crowd and giving everyone a big smile. Makena Graber and her own Ragtime Mi Oro Double were a dominate force, winning in both the Hunter Pleasure and Equitation divisions. It was particularly sweet to see her win the AMHA Hunt Seat on the Flat Medal class in her first try at it. Mia Bouslaugh was stellar at Motherlode with Dragonfire Lotus. Mia was so impressive at her first show, keeping her head on straight thru all of her flat classes and even over fences. She went home with some really nice red ribbons to start her collection. Taylor McFall got a taste of what it was like for her parents riding multiple horses at a show, and in loads of classes to boot. She was in heaven winning blue ribbons with Dragonfire Kublakhan in the Dressage, and even more blue ribbons with her pony, Roses Are Blue, in the Jumping and Hunter Pleasure. Our adult riders were fantastic to watch as well. Natalie Jensen gave a solid but sparkle plenty performance with Rendition Thrill A Minute to win the Amateur Hunter Pleasure Championship. Barbara Fleming has been working very hard in the Dressage with her gelding, Alias, and was rewarded for that hard work with very high marks (over 70%) in Second Level. Both Kammy Bhala, riding Ragtime White Magic, and Toni Casados, riding Whitmor's Magnitude, went for the Dressage classes and did us proud with their great rides and fortitude in the heat.

Akira Beijing and Erin Critz were spot on over fences in the Working Hunter Division. Erin worked forward and straight lines, attacking the distances with her game mare. In the end, they were the Working Hunter Champions.

Raleigh Relocates

Located in sunny Santa Barbara, the Morgan Medallion Classic has always drawn world class Morgan competitors to the Earl Warren Fairgrounds where the ocean breeze keeps you cool in those hot show clothes. If the weather isn't enough to get you down there, the town certainly will, with the best fish tacos in the land. This year's show was improved greatly by a new schedule that allowed you to sleep in and then offered a long break in the show during the afternoon. Dragonfire really took advantage of the gorgeous afternoons and spent every one of them at THE BEACH visiting with friends and clients new and old!!

When we weren't enjoying ourselves in the sand, we were having an absolutely fantastic show at the fairgrounds. Dragonfire is blessed with a show string filled with depth and quality, a staff that knows how to hustle, and great riders and owners. This combination isn't easy to come by, and we are eternally grateful for it.

Whitegold Rags to Riches

Earl McFall and Whitegold Rags to Riches had a wildly successful show, winning six out of seven classes. Out of his four Over Fences classes he won three and was second in the last with his quiet and relaxed style. He then continued on to be undefeated in the Dressage and was the High Scoring Dressage Horse with a 74.4%. What a class act this big and handsome fellow is. Owner Bonnie Bowers is seriously overrun with awards from this buckskin beauty!

Miss Ruby Slippers

Michael and Melissa Votaw's extreme beauty, Miss Ruby Slippers, went undefeated with Jennifer McFall riding. This mare has the grace and finesse of a much more seasoned competitor, and with these great qualities combined with her looks and soft movement, Ruby won both the Four and Under Western Pleasure and the Junior Western Pleasure Championship.

French Flambeau featuring a CWD saddle

Switching careers, French Flambeau turned some heads and gave two fantastic performances his first time out as a Hunter. Presented by Jennifer McFall and owned by Tom and Stephanie Connor, Flambeau loves to show and is simply a joy to ride. His willing and happy attitude, paired with a motivated engine, gave him the advantage for the win in the Novice Hunter Pleasure as well as the Reserve Championship in the Open Hunter Pleasure. Great things are certainly ahead for him!

Dragonfire Nefertiti

Caroline Dein continues to heat things up in the Junior Exhibitor Hunter Pleasure with Toni Casados' mare, Dragonfire Nefertiti. Although Caroline is new to the Morgan World, her experience as a Three Day Event rider makes her great in the show ring. And of course "Faye" knows her stuff in the show ring, being a many time Champion in both Ladies and Open Hunter Pleasure including wins in the OKC Coliseum. The pairing of these two has been nothing short of magical, with an undefeated record on the West Coast. Adding to their Region 8 Championship from Far West, Caroline and Nefertiti came away with the Region 7 Championship in Santa Barbara as well.

Alias

Barbara Fleming joined in on the winning and brought home her own set of roses riding Alias to the Limit Hunter Pleasure Championship. This is a great partnership that spans over several years now and includes Dressage and avid trail riding, as well as making victory passes in the show. Barbara and Alias also trotted away with the win in the Amateur Masters Hunter Pleasure.

Art In Motion

Art In Motion is a promising young sport horse with a bright career ahead of him. Along with his owner/rider, Natalie Jensen, "Spencer" showed his talent over fences at the Morgan Medallion. With a few seconds under their belt to start with, this team went head on with trainer, Earl McFall, and won their final class with gusto, leaving Earl with his only red ribbon of the show with Whitegold Rags to Riches.

Lovey of Stilwell

ALB Morgans has just recently established it's breeding program, and is already meeting great success with it's first youngsters in performance. Lovey of Stilwell has the makings of a first class western pleasure horse, with her strong type and conformation and her ability to easily hold herself together. She collected the Three Year Old Western Pleasure win at Medallion, to go along with her Far West Reserve Championship in the Junior Horse division.

The Merriewold Morgans are known for their top class Sport Horses in the Morgan World. Adding to their show repertoire, Merriewold JS Bach has been a very consistent winner on the West Coast in the Hunter Pleasure division and is securing his breeder as show performance producer as well. With wins at all three shows he has attended this season, including the Limit Hunter Pleasure at Medallion, JS is a four year old to keep your eye on.

Chehalem Cassanova

Macey McCallion has to be one of the most elegant looking riders on the scene. Not only that, she has the prowess of a jungle cat in the ring, calculating to the end. She and her long time partner, Chehalem Cassanova were at the top of the judge's card all week, with a win in the Pro/Am Hunter Pleasure along with trainer, Earl McFall. These three (Cass, too) are all so professional, and it is a great match having Macey and Earl show together since they are both extremely long and lean! The stirrup length didn't even need to be adjusted.

We have to mention that this was the 50th Anniversary of the Morgan Medallion and the show staff did a bang up job making it special. It was wonderful seeing all of the old pictures of past winners, receiving the awesome goodie bags with lots of swag, and having the classes sponsored for "blasts from the past". It was especially wonderful to me, as I have been an exhibitor for twenty seven years uninterupted. Ahhhh..... Santa Barbara... we love you and can't wait to return!

Advanced Success for Earl McFall and In A Dream

This team has been blazing their way through the levels, with the Galway CCI*** as the big goal for 2011. Highland Empress Scores Royally

Dragonfire's own Highland Empress is looking stunning as a three year old. Bred "in the purple" for Three Day Eventing, her family tree reads like a who's who at the Olympic level. By Master Imp and out of a Cavalier Royale/Clover Hill dam, "Jade" is as Irish as they come. In her debut as a Three Year Old at the Woodside YEH she scored a whopping 81, besting her two year old score of 78.9. We are thrilled with her progress in training as well, as she has been a delight to start under saddle.

Dragonfire's resident DQ, High Times, scored over a 70% to win at the Golden State Dressage Show with Earl McFall in the irons. Earl is prepping for the Summer Woodside Event aboard "Billy" and decided to take a trip to Star Vaughn to do some circles inside a rectangle. His decision paid off, not only for schooling purposes but in accolades as well. It's nice to see an Event horse hang with the Dressage horses and beat them at their own game. Way to wear the white pants, Earl!

This saying is certainly true for Dragonfire student, Barbara Fleming. She has really been getting in shape with her Morgan partner, Alias, and the two have been setting the open Dressage circuit on fire lately. Flexing her might at both the Golden State Dressage and Dressage In The Almonds Shows, Barbara came away with no less than first place every time. She even grabbed a "9" on a complicated move! I guess that extra weight lifting has really paid off... keep pumping that iron, Barbara!

Dragonfire Shaolin Voted Best Performance Of Far West

Congratulations go out to Kris Johnsen and Dragonfire Shaolin for being voted the Best Performance of the entire Far West show by the judging panel. Their outstanding drive Saturday night clinched the Open Pleasure Driving Championship and also the adoration of the crowd and the other judges watching. Forest Nealon of Illahee trains this great pair.

Shaolin is out of our great broodmare, and daughter of Kirin, Dragonfire Nova. Nova had an impressive week at the Far West Regionals as a producer. She had three foals by three different studs at the show, all Champions in their respective divisions. Dragonfire Shaolin: Champion of the Open Pleasure Driving, Dragonfire Wasabi: Grand Champion Stallion, and Dragonfire Nefertiti: Champion in both Junior Exhibitor Hunter Pleasure and Amateur Hunter Pleasure. As a matter of fact, all of these horses were undefeated the entire week. Go Dragonfire!

Far West = Fun Times

The Far West Regional Morgan Championships has always been a great show for Dragonfire. Redmond, Oregon features stunning views of mountains, lakes and, my personal favorites, Rockchucks! There are always great friends to share the pool, boat or golf course with, and fantastic eateries to keep you entertained at night after the show. We always enjoy the atmosphere as much as the show itself. But this year was particularly sweet, as Dragonfire won every available championship in the hunter Pleasure division. Go Team!!

Rendition's Thrill A Minute really gave the crowd what they wanted in the Open Hunter Pleasure Championship with Jennifer McFall aboard. This exotic dark bay gelding showed like he owned the ring, even though this was the first show for the young performer. He not only shined on the rail, but he stripped beautifully to be named the Champion for his owner, Illahee, Inc.

Few are as beautiful and accomplished as Dragonfire Timeless. After a stellar year in the Four Year Old ranks, Timeless smoothly transitioned into the Ladies Division at the Far West Regional. Presented by Jennifer McFall and owned by Dragonfire, he won both his qualifier and the Championship, keeping his undefeated record at this show.

At his maiden show under saddle, Merriewold JS Bach gave the winning performance in the Junior Hunter Pleasure Championship. This big and bold four year old was the picture of a gentleman with Devyn Rau presenting. JS will certainly have a long and prosperous career in the show ring as a top Hunter. Owner of JS, Diana Wold of Merriewold Morgans is proving to have a very successful and competitive breeding program.

Speaking of strong breeding programs, ALB Morgans have been producing beautiful youngsters for Sport and Show. One of their first to hit the ring, Lovey of Stilwell, was the reserve winner in the Three Year Old Western Pleasure and was also the Reserve Champion in the Junior Western Pleasure with Earl McFall riding.

Dragonfire Farm is the proud owner and breeder of the Far West Grand Champion Stallion, Dragonfire Wasabi. This stunning yearling was expertly presented by Forest Nealon and Tom Tornatore. No doubt, this colt is destined for greatness, as he is by Grand Cru Beaujolais and out of Dragonfire Nova (dam of Dragonfire Nefertiti and Dragonfire Shaolin).

Going undefeated in five classes was Dragonfire Nefertiti with her two riders, Caroline Dein and Devyn Rau. "Faye" has always been stellar, and this show was no different with wins in Amateur, Ladies Amateur, and Junior Exhibitor Hunter Pleasure. She took both Caroline and Devyn for their first championship victory pass...though I doubt it will be their last! This gorgeous black mare always garners praise from the crowd, much to the delight of owner, Toni Casados.

Axiom DF is a 2010 American Warmblood gelding by the Hosteiner stallion, Ariadus. Arguably one of the most beautiful in the breed, Ariadus received a "9" for type and consistently is praised for the temperaments on his foals. Axiom's dam is Lucid Opposition. Sired by the great Fleetwater Opposition, who has been a dominate force in the Trakehner breed, Lucid Opposition is a sibling to Eventing Olympic greats, Summer Song and Opposition Buzz.

High Times Hits His Stride At The Woodside $15,000 Preliminary Challenge

High Times gave his best all around performance, at his most difficult competition to date, during the 2011 Woodside $15,000 Preliminary Horse Challenge to finish in a strong second place.

After a very quiet and steady Dressage test with Jennifer McFall in the irons, "Billy" was tied for second place with Gina Miles' seasoned Preliminary competitor, Sunsprite Patronus, and just a few points out of first. Following Dressage day, the cross country course was full of technical questions and hills to navigate. Billy overcame most of his desire to study each fence closely before jumping and put in his fastest round yet, with just one second over the time at the finish. This gave Gina the edge to break the tie and go into the Stadium round in second place.

The Preliminary Challenge runs the Stadium on the eve of cross country day during the competitor's party so that all can enjoy the intense battle for the prize money from the comforts of the party tent. So, even though there is a very electric atmosphere, most of the horses are feeling quite fatigued after their morning's exertions, and Billy was no exception. The course had several bending lines and square oxers, but to great applause, High Times gave a beautiful clear round to put the pressure on second and first place. As it was, second place had an unfortunate stop and a rails, so Billy moved up in placings and prize money.

Tim Terrific, a four year old American Thoroughbred, made his debut performance with Earl McFall riding. This stunning steel gray was a super star, finishing the weekend in fourth in his Beginner Novice division.

After a text book, perfect ride across country, they added no more penalties after the stadium round to finish on their Dressage score. Taylor McFall and her trusty steed, Rosie took their first "swim in the deep end" at the Starr Vaughn Hunter/Jumper Schooling Show today. In their first ever over fences performance away from Dragonfire, this pair (gulp) was in an eighteen (that's 18! folks!) deep OPEN cross bar class. As she finished, I was so relieved that they just got around with no major mishaps that I remember from my childhood and really had no thoughts of a further prize at the end of the day. Let's Go DF or "Scotty" is a Sport Horse fanatic's dream. He is royally bred by Linaro ( a long time favorite in the Holsteiner registry) and out of Rani D (full sister to USDF champions). He is tall, very stoutly built, and incredibly charismatic. He doesn't move like other horses, rather he floats as if he has rubber for joints. Our latest and most adored addition to Dragonfire, SirUP!, had a photo shoot with our own Nancy Dein yesterday. As you can see she did a fabulous job, but of course taking pictures of such a divine cutie isn't too hard. SirUP! is a cross bred pony by a cremello Morgan stallion and out of a chestnut welsh mare so he is a guaranteed palomino. He is Taylor's future project to train and sell, though I am not sure if there is anyone rich enough out there to buy him. His price tag is currently "one BILLION dollars". Here's to aiming high Taylor!

Dragonfire Hosts It's First Academy Show of the Year

It was a great (albeit windy) day for The Academy @ Dragonfire's first show of the season. For many, this was either their first show ever or their first Combined Test. There was something for everyone as the classes ranged from Walk Trot Dressage and "rails-on-the-ground" to Preliminary Level Dressage and jumping. Everyone showed up prepared and did their best... a group that would make any trainer proud.

Sheldon Feed again sponsored the prizes for the show, which were incredibly generous. Please make sure to check them out for all of your stable needs. We had a great crew of volunteers, and a super judge in Barbara Fleming. Our thanks to them, and also to Nancy Dein for all of the photos she took that day.Without all of you, we wouldn't be able to have such a wonderful venue for our Academy riders to show what they have learned.

And now for the big news from the April Ram Tap, even if it is a little on the late side. Tracy Felt took over the reins on her own horse, Infinite, to claim third in their first ever Training Level round together. Tracy had a great time piloting this talented character around the courses, and "Nate-the-Great" showed the adoring masses how much he enjoys his work. Nate is by our own Dragonfire Kirin and out of a race bred TB dam, a cross we duplicated with the winning young mare, Miss Jeanie C. We can't wait to see what both of these young stars accomplish with their talented owner/riders!

There's no question that Lucy and Caroline are fast becoming a super team, the only question is, are the Deins' looking to adopt a slightly aging (and only somewhat grumpy) horse trainer into the family? Both the Galway CIC ** and the Twin Rivers CCI** were successful trips for Earl and the Dream Girl (AKA In A Dream). Galway was their first FEI competition together and was a bit of a eye opener on the mare's depth. She was very good for the Dressage, but may have rather left it at that on Friday. Instead she was asked to jump her show jump round in 90 degree weather later that same day when she had been used to the mid-fifties. Though the distances and rhythm were good, she just couldn't leave those colored rails alone and three came down. Earl was very disappointed and a bit worried about what the next day would bring for them on the longest track they would have tackled together to date. But Dream came thru like a true professional and they made short work of the big and technical course. Devyn and I had a bit of "an incident" trying to keep up with them on course, and had to be satisfied with the announcer telling us of their job well done at each complex. By adding only a few seconds to their score, they moved up in the placings and finished the competition in seventh.

Which is faster: horse or machine?? The Answer: When Devyn and Jenny are riding double on a dirt bike, definitely HORSE! This is a picture of the skid mark we left trying to keep up with Earl and Dream. The print of where we rolled around on the ground after the bike reared over on us, and the embarrassed faces of the onlookers...not shown.

Earl's prowess across country was a highlight at The Twin Rivers CCI**. The eight minute track was quite a bit longer than Galway, so fitness and the rider's ability to stay sharp at the end came into play. Earl and Dream were certainly up to the task, and the duo turned quite a few heads with their textbook round. To top off the weekend, they bettered their stadium record the next day with just one down to finish in fifth overall.

Both High Times and Wrigley had stellar rounds in the Preliminary level with myself and Natalie Jensen aboard. We were both looking for clean and confident trips around the cross country with our somewhat emotional boys. Although we sacrificed time to go clean, we both felt we made strides to improve our horses' ride-ability.

Congratulations to the Vaughn Family of Akron, Ohio on their purchase of Merriewold Hanah for Ally Vaughn. Hanah was bred and owned by Merriewold Morgans and reached great heights with Earl McFall in the irons. She has had wins in Dressage, Hunter Pleasure, Hunters Over Fences and had started a successful Eventing career in two short years. Dragonfire Chi Lin (Greenmead’s Pioneer x Ramona Fawn)

Dragonfire Chi Lin was foaled in 1978 as one of the first foals produced by the then fledgling, Dragonfire Farm. The mare was a forward, working type horse and was herself a many time Regional winner with her young owner/rider Jennifer Forrest in Hunters, Dressage and Equitation. But where she really made her mark was as a producer of World Champion performance horses for Dragonfire Farm. These foals in turn went on to produce World Champions themselves, carrying on Chi Lin’s legacy.

Chi Lin’s first foal is perhaps her most famous, Dragonfire Kublakhan. By U.C. Viscount, Kublakhan was a dynamic pairing of working lines crossed with show lines. Ridden by Jennifer (Chang) McFall, Kublakhan was a many time World Champion in Dressage, Hunters and Jumpers. He was one of the first Morgans to break into the upper levels of Three Day Eventing, winning over scores of fans as he climbed the ranks all the way to the Advanced Level. He was the USEA Morgan of the Year several times, he was voted the People’s Choice Sport Horse of the Century, and still graces the cover of the “A” Pony Club Manual. At 28 years of age, he is an invaluable part of the Academy @ Dragonfire Lesson Program.

Dragonfire Ladyhawke, a full sibling to Kublakhan, became a World Champion in Dressage with her owner/rider Margaret Cunningham. Interestingly, her only two foals were by Cedar City Penbrook and they both became World Champions. Dragonfire Marley took Oklahoma victory passes in Dressage, Hunter Pleasure, and Jumpers for Dragonfire Farm, while Celeste Aida won in Dressage with Margaret.

Chi Lin’s stallion son, Dragonfire Kirin, is also by Cedar City Penbrook. Campaigned by Jennifer McFall in Sport and Show disciplines alike, Kirin met success in whatever arena he was in. By age 5, he had won multiple World titles, in Dressage and Hunter Pleasure (including the Open) and had competed through Training Level Eventing. As a sire, he has produced much loved performers as RWC Lightyear, and the great producing mare, Dragonfire Nova. Nova’s offspring include Dragonfire Shaolin, a RWC in Park Harness and In Hand, along with back to back victories in Gentlemen’s Am. Pleasure Driving. Dragonfire Nefertiti, who is also out of Nova is a RWC in Hunter Pleasure and a crowd pleaser wherever she goes.

Dragonfire Chi Lin has quietly played an integral part in shaping the standards for today’s Morgan in both Sport and Show. She has had a lasting impact on the breed and continues to do so with the success of her descendants.

The March Twin Rivers Winter Horse Trials was a blast for so many reasons. First of all, we had fantastic weather! Generally

speaking, the weather is not a very interesting topic and more of a side note. But, considering the fact that I could get around the farm in a canoe as well as on a horse lately, makes me appreciate that show's sunshine all the more! d at the farm. We couldn't be more proud of this ambassador for our breeding program as he is as consistent as he is athletic. In his second Training outing, he placed at the top again, this time in fourth place. Hanah shows her Morgan flair for style over a fence at the Novice level and finished in seventh in great form.

Katie Klooster escaped from the lab at UC Davis and competed with her own EMR Windchester (another Morgan Horse) after a four year hiatus. They didn't look like they had any time off at all, and tore up the Novice track...with only a few, tiny, itsy bitsy speed-faults to show for it. Even with a speeding ticket, they were good for fourth place after their very solid rides in Dressage and Stadium. We had another fourth place fini

sher in Christina Underwood and The Dark Knight in Beginner Novice. After a stock tie incident in the Dressage that will remain a secret ;-), Christina had one of the most forward stadium rounds she has ever produced. After that clear in the stadium ring, and a bit of luck across country, she added yet another ribbon to her growing collection.

High Times had a very positive outing in the Preliminary division with two clean goes in both the stadium and the cross country phases with Jennifer McFall riding. This young star certainly has an exciting career ahead of him.

Rain Doesn't Damper Dragonfire Performances at Ram Tap

The cold, rain and mud in Fresno couldn't keep a good rider/horse/team down! Despite facing frostbitten noses and very high dry cleaning bills, our riders were tough and ready for action at the Ram Tap Winter Horse Trials.

Dragonfire put forth a victorious Training Level Team consisting of two experienced campaigners and two very exciting rookies. Natalie Jensen gave a solidly consistent ride to her flashy gelding, Wrigley in each phase of the competition. She was all business as she clocked around the cross country to finish in a strong second place in the Sr. Training division. Earl and Oscar were also part of this team, with solid rides in all three phases and a fourth place in Open Training. Caroline Dein showed what she was made of as she tackled her maiden Training Level performance and first ever corner. (I'd say judging by the picture below, there wasn't much cause for anxiety!). After an "expressive" Dressage test in the mud, Caroline piloted Will Power around two beautiful jumping rounds and a sixth place finish in Jr. Training. Infinite is the apple of his owner Tracy Felt's eye and he did not fail to impress at Ram Tap. With Earl McFall aboard, he was stylish in his move up into the Training Level ranks, gaining a second place finish in the Open Training.

Dragonfire's 2010 Student of the Year, Christina Underwood was a total rockstar aboard the Dark Knight. After TWO double clear rounds (a first for her), she moved up to third place in the Sr. Beginner Novice AND managed to have the time of her life in the mud. Way to go!

Merriewold Hanah absolutely loves to jump, and is in her most natural state during the cross country. Her rhythm was impeccable and form was text book as she ended seventh in the Open Novice division. Art in Motion had his move up to Novice with his owner Natalie Jensen. After being a little intimidated in the stadium ring, he took the cross country by storm (pun intended) and ended on a very positive note. Speaking of positive, Merissa Underwood did not have the weekend she had hoped for, but she certainly had the attitude that all trainers hope for, which will take her far in this tough sport of Eventing!

Lucid Opposition Breaks Records

WOW! That's about all we could say after getting Lucy's Dressage Test back at the Twin Rivers Combined Test. Though you can't see it in the picture above, the total penalty score for her test was a "9"!

Of course, she is bred to be a champion like so many other of her siblings by Fleetwater Opposition. But, with a year and a half off to be bred, and only a handful of weeks back under saddle, she exceeded all expectations by a mile! After earning this phenomenal score, she went on to jump clean and win her first show back.

Heraldik xx came in to breeding after a long and successful International Show Jumping career where he participated in Nation’s Cups and other Grand Prix. Heraldik xx is inbred to Nearco xx (Lucky Boy xx, Sacramento Song xx and Marlon xx) as well as Hurry On xx (foundation sire of Furioso xx). Donnerhall

Donnerhall is approved for Oldenburg, Hanovarian, Westphalian, Holstein, Bavarian, Baden-Wurttemberg, Hessen, KWPN, Danish Warmblood. He managed like no other sire of his generation to combine success in breeding and in sport alike. In 1986 Donnerhall was the German DLG Champion in Hanover. After many wins in Grand Prix, Grand Prix Special and freestyle classes at International level he became German champion in Mannheim in 1994, team world champion and individual bronze medal winner in The Hague. This was followed by another climax in 1997: Team gold and individual bronze at the European Dressage Championships in Verden. In 1998 he was once more included in the German world championship team and was a member of the gold medal team in Rome, where he attained fourth place in the individual results. Cavalier Royale is by COR DE LA BRYERE, probably the leading sire in the world of top performers in all three disciplines and a world class sire of sires he has in excess of 50 approved sons at stud worldwide. Corlandus, Chanel K, Classic Touch, Calvaro, Caletto I and II, Corlando and Cordeka immediately coming to mind. Cavalier Royale himself had a successful career in Switzerland and on the continent, Cavalier graduated up the ranks to Grade A, and was a multiple Grand Prix winner. He also jumped 2m 15 (over 7 feet) in Puissance in Germany. After being imported to Ireland, he is the only sire to challenge the total supremacy of Clover Hill. Linaro

As champion stallion of his 100 Day test in 1991 Linaro went on to win the German riding horse championships in Verden. Linaro is also approved Danish Warmblood, Hannovarian and Oldenburg Verband. Linaro produces just about more Premium foals every year than anyone else. His offspring are characterized by their legginess and unmistakable beauty. He is also able to pass on his dark brown color, huge, elastic movement and jumping prowess. Linaro produced the Champion Stallion at the 1997 Hosteiner stallion approvals in Neumunster, Germany. His offspring in the U.S. are proving to be very exciting competitors for Eventing.

Fleetwater Opposition

Fleetwater Opposition is a world famous sire of Olympic Event horses, such as Summer Song. He himself won the Junior European 3 Day Event Individual and Team Gold Medals. He was also a highly successful Advanced Dressage stallion with impeccable bloodlines. He is closely related to Almox Prints J the Olympic Show Jumper and Pepel the Olympic Dressage Silver Medallist. He won Elite Graded Double Gold Medallist 3 Day Eventer & Advanced Dressage Stallion, was the Winner of the Sporthorse Breeding (GB) Lifetime Achievement Award, and Winner of the Trakehner Breeders Fraternity Lifetime Excellence Award. He is currently ranked #9 in the World Rankings for Eventing with British phenom, Opposition Buzz, being part of the Gold Medal WEG Team.

Ariadus

Ariadus is strikingly beautiful with a super temperament combined with absolutely correct conformation. Ariadus is from Accord II, himself a 100 Day Test champion. Accord II is widely regarded as an important contributor in Europe. He was the leading sire for mares bred in Germany. Ariadus received a "9" on type and "8's" on both front and hind legs; a score seldom seen. Ariadus is by Accord II(Ahorn) out of a Latus II (Landgraf)/Laertes mare. Ariadus' granddam is the dam of CAPITOL, legendary sire from Holstein. Ariadus was 4th at the 1995 stallion approvals in Neumunster. He produces champions in all sport disciplines with outstanding temperaments.

Calido

Calido I completed his stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf in 1994, placing fourth in his age class with a score of 140. Calido I received the incredible score of 10.0 for jumping ability as well as the highest jumping index of 53 contenders. In 1996 Calido won 22 show jumping competitions up to the intermediate level and was successful at the Federal German Showjumping Championships. Calido's tremendous show jumping talent is passed onto his offspring. Calido I has sired 15 approved stallions in seven countries. In 2010, he was rated #13 in the World Sire Rankings. He is not only a very sought after show jumping sire, he also has produced eventing super stars such as Lady Calido.

Dragonfire Kirin

Dragonfire Kirin holds World Champion titles in Four Year Old Hunter Pleasure, Open Hunter Pleasure, Youth Hunter Pleasure, Training Level Dressage, First Level Dressage Open and Amateur, and Second Level Dressage. He has countless national and regional titles to his credit. Kirin has an incredible work ethic, a very kind and gentle nature, and three good gaits with an exceptional uphill canter. Kirin is not just a performance horse; he has outstanding conformation as well. With a smooth topline and short back, he is double registered as a Morgan and an American Warmblood, winning the gold medal for being the best horse at the inspection in Northern California that year. He comes by his athleticism naturally, as he is a maternal brother to one of the greatest Morgan eventers of all time, Dragonfire Kublakhan. Kirin's get are successfully competing in a number of divisions.

Grand Cru Beaujolais

Arguably, Grand Cru Beaujolais is one of the most beautiful examples of the Morgan Western Pleasure Horse in the country. He is a three-time World Champion winning the Four-year-old Championship in 2003, the Open Championship in 2004 and, again, in 2010. You can't get prettier lines in the Morgan breed.

Undisputedly one of the top sires of Morgan World Champions in the country, MINION MILLENNIUM provides size, athletic ability, long well set necks and beautiful, smooth bodies. Dragonfire Timeless and Jennifer McFall competing in Oklahoma City

We couldn't be more proud of our own Dragonfire Timeless and his performances at the 2010 Morgan Grand National and World Championships. Capturing both the Four Year Old Hunter Pleasure Reserve World Championship and the reserve in the National qualifier, Timmy displayed his powerful movement in the most graceful package.

By the outstanding producing sire, Minion Millennium, and out of the late, great Raintree Ala Bella, Timmy is easily one of the most fun horses I have ever shown. He has a forward and floating trot that he can extend easily without losing balance or tempo. His canter is so light and slow, that I often find myself daydreaming without a care in the world. And let's not forget his flat footed and relaxed walk! All of this, AND he is arguably one of the prettiest Hunters out there. It was an absolute joy for me to compete and win with Timmy throughout the 2010 show season.

Timeless is surely destined to follow in the footsteps of our many Dragonfire champions before him, and be a favorite in Oklahoma City for many, many years to come!

We are proud to announce that Christina Underwood is Dragonfire's first Student of the Year! A true inspiration to us all, Christina has graduated from the Academy Shows held at Dragonfire, all the way to completing a recognized Horse Trials at the Beginner Novice level, just in one short year.

Christina has had to overcome a great loss on her way to success. In the middle of the year, she lost her beloved mare, Star, to colic. She was faced with the challenge of riding a new mount and the fear that she would not have the same bond that she had with Star. But, if there is anything that Christina has loads of, it's determination. With her goal of becoming an event rider in mind, she began her partnership with The Dark Knight aka "Masto".

After several sweaty lessons a week, road trips to school cross country, DF's Boot Camp at Eventful Acres, and one attempt at Copper Meadows that she was unable to finish, Christina and Masto conquered the Fall Event at Ram Tap Horse Trials. Wow!

So, you might think that after all of that, Christina would take a little breather and ease off the riding for the Holidays. Well, you'd be wrong! She is already training for her next goal... to show at The 2011 Event at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell, MT. All we can say is lead the way, Christina, we here at Dragonfire are right behind you!

Strong Performances at Ram Tap Horse Trials

At the October Ram Tap Horse Trials, Earl McFall piloted Ian Deary's mare, In A Dream to a fantastic second place finish in the Open Preliminary. This is most certainly a pair to keep your eye on as they have all of the makings of being upper-level contenders.

Ram Tap was also host to the the maiden performance of Caroline Dein aboard her new partner, Will Power. Although this is a relatively new team, they are filled with talent and potential. They also proved to be steady and determined to the end, as they clinched the win in the Junior Novice division. We couldn't be more proud of them....unless we were Caroline's parents, who were both there to cheer her on!

Devyn Rau piloted her young mount, Miss Jeanie C, to a first place finish at the Eventful Acres Fall Horse Trials. This ultra-sensible four year old mare is by Dragonfire Kirin and out of a race bred TB dam. Kirin has crossed onto TB and Warmblood mares beautifully, producing tractable and athletic mounts. Devyn has brought "Jeanie-the-Genius" along herself, and we have no doubt that this team will have many more successes to write about in the future! Congratulations Devyn!!!

Dragonfire Sizzles in Santa Barbara

It would be an understatement to say that Santa Barbara is one of the best places on the West Coast to show horses. While the town most certainly provides fun-in-the-sun daytime adventures and a friendly atmosphere for eating and nightlife, it is the great competition that makes the Morgan Medallion a show not to miss. Every class seems to have a past World Champion in it and each rider is turned out impeccably. Team Dragonfire not only gave many stylish performances, but also had a fantastic time doing it!

Merriewold Hanah with Earl McFall

Earl McFall and Merriewold Hanah presented a picture of power and grace in the Working Hunter division that was unstoppable. Hanah's flair over a fence combined with Earl's experience proved too tough for the competition as this pair won the Working Hunter Under Saddle, The Low Warm Up Hunters and also the Low Working Hunters. Proudly owned by Merriewold Morgans, Hanah is well on her way to establishing herself as one of the best sport horses in competition with wins in Dressage as well as over fences.

Taylor McFall

Ironforge Aire Command and Taylor McFall

In one of the most entertaining classes of the show, young Taylor McFall really gave it her all in the Walk/Jog/Trot Pleasure Championship. After working the kinks out in the qualifiers with her partner, Ironforge Aire Command, Taylor was really up for the challenge of competing against the older and more experienced riders. The crowd and the judge alike could really see that she was "feeling the rhythm" in her championship. The announcement that Taylor and Ace had won the Reserve Championship was met with great approval from the stands and a teary eyed congratulations from her coach Melissa Votaw.

Rosy Outlook and Earl McFall

Rosy Outlook continued her winning ways under the guidance of Earl McFall. This perky, but sensible chestnut filly has a smooth and forward motion that gives her definite advantage over her competition. Bred to be a sport and show winner, she is by Dragonfire Kirin who not only won World titles in Dressage but also the Open Hunter World Championship, and is out of a Holiday Compadre daughter. Compadre was also a show/sport crossover with Open Western Pleasure World Titles along with victories in Reining. Rosy gave winning performances all week with a win in Dressage Suitability and in the Three Year Old Hunter Pleasure. She then went on the be named the Reserve Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse Champion.

Dragonfire Timeless is living up to his family's winning reputation with a red-hot season in his first year on the circuit. By the ever popular Minion Millennium who has produced World Champions in Park, In Hand and Hunters, and out of the beautiful Raintree Ala Bella, "Timmy" is a serious class act. When this colt hits the ring he inspires comments from the crowd about his square and smooth uphill motion, and also his obvious ease in which he performs his paces. Timeless gathered up more victories at the Morgan Medallion with the win in the Four and Under Hunter Pleasure and the Junior Hunter Pleasure Grand Championship, to go along with his Far West Championship.

The Ladies Hunter Pleasure Championship, along with the qualifier, went to Dragonfire Nefertiti and Jennifer McFall. Owned by Antonia Casados, 'Faye' is an undeniable beauty in the Hunter division. Every season this mare gets better and better, as she combines sexy good looks with tons of heart. Dragonfire is extremely proud of this perennial winner and granddaughter of our senior stallion, Dragonfire Kirin.

Not pictured, Macy McCallion piloted her own Chehelam Cassanova to a Reserve Championship victory in the Amateur Hunter Pleasure. Macy is one of the most elegant riders, with long legs and impeccable poise. Cassanova is as steady as he is forward, and the two of them make a lovely picture.

Dragonfire Heats Up The Motherlode Show

The Motherlode Show in Rancho Murieta, CA over Labor Day Weekend always promises to be "hot" with friendly competition. This year was no different as the Dragonfire Team brought the temperatures up with steamy performances in several different divisions. By the end of the show many lessons were learned, ribbons were won, and friendships were cemented by the common bond of enjoying great horses.

Stilwell Thunder

Earl McFall started us off with big wins for ALB Morgans. The yearling stud, Stilwell Thunder, was beautiful for the win in the Sport Horse Two and Under Stallions class. A son UVM Springfield, Thunder is as confident as he is good looking. At his first ever show, he was a model citizen and was not intimidated in the least when he went back in for the Grand Championship against the matured studs. Thunder then took the Grand Champion Stallion title, no easy feat for a yearling.

Lovey of Stilwell

Lovey of Stilwell, a two year old filly also by UVM Springfield, was up next and also gave a great show. Led by Earl McFall, Lovey was the blue ribbon winner in the Two and Under Sport Horse Mares class. This adorable bay trimmed in white then strutted her stuff in the championship to be named the Reserve Grand Champion Sport Horse Mare. Both ALB Morgans and Paradise Morgans (owners of Springfield) have a lot to celebrate after these big wins!

At their first ever rated Dressage show, Kammy Bhala and Toni Casados, hit the court with gusto. Kammy, aboard Iron Forge Aire Command, was all business and accuracy in Opportunity Training Level Test 2. Toni, riding her own Whitmor's Magnitude, was uber-focused to keep her mount on track and doing all of the movements at the appropriate times. These ladies efforts were well rewarded with a first place nod going to Kammy and the second place going to Toni. Way to go!

Dragonfire Lotus

Another maiden voyage was made at the Motherlode, this time for the young mare, Dragonfire Lotus. At her first ever Dressage show, she scored an amazing 68.92% in Training Level Test 2!!! Ridden by Jennifer McFall, she was as cool as a veteran in the show arena and ultra stylish. This three year old Morgan, sired by Dragonfire Kirin, promises to have the same illustrious career he had in the Sport Arena.

High Times

High Times and Jennifer McFall were the high scorers of the show with a 72% in First Level Test 3. The six year old Holstiener gelding has the most eye-catching gaits, which make him hard to resist. Combine his gaits with bold riding, and you have a recipe for victory. He not only won First 3, but also won First Level Test 4.

Ragtime Mi Oro Double and Makena Graber with Traci Graber

Makena Graber, after spending the majority of the season with her new mount Ragtime Mi Oro Double at the Academy @ Dragonfire Show Series getting invaluable experience, was ready to hit the bigger shows. With great support from her loving family, Makena "jumped into the deep end" with great success! "Sugar" was as adorable as they come, as she rose to the challenge and gave some of her best performances. With roaring applause from her family and barn-mates, Makena won the Junior Exhibitor Hunter Seat Equitation. Coached by Melissa Votaw, she was so poised and collected, you would have never known that this was her first Class A show with Sugar. As if that weren't enough, this team also gathered up the Reserve Junior Exhibitor Hunter Pleasure Championship sash.

Natalie Jensen was absolutely thrilled with her baby's performance. Art in Motion, a four year old gelding by Dragonfire Kirin, was stellar at his first ever show. Art in Motion is pictured to the left over fences and to the right proudly receiving his awards. Gathering top ribbons in both Dressage and jumping, it's hard not to compare this youngster to the great Dragonfire Kublakhan. His fantastic gaits and extravagant jumping style will certainly take him a VERY long way. Shown by Natalie, "Spencer" won the Low Working Hunter Reserve Championship.

The real stars of Dragonfire, were a select group of our Academy riders tackling the Opportunity 13 and Under Junior Exhibitor classes. These little professionals were expertly coached by Melissa Votaw, in what were some of the biggest classes of the show. Their enthusiastic determination easily brought compliments from the crowds and kudos from the show officials. Alyssa Hansen, riding Whitmor's Magnitude was solid for a red ribbon in the Equitation class. Her strong position and ring savvy give her an obvious advantage. Katie Sipes, paired with World Champion Celeste Aida, was called out as the reserve winner in the Pleasure class. This was a very pleasing picture, as Katie had a beautifully forward rhythm going on Aida, and looked every bit the part of a young equestrienne. Taylor McFall piloted Iron Forge Aire Command for sixth place in both of these great classes.

Montana On Our Minds

The idea of The Event at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell, MT had danced in our minds for several years. We had heard all of the glowing reports of the facility, the footing, the jumps and the hospitality. We also knew that it was an event that could draw riders from all over the country, making it the largest competition in the United States. With a spirit of adventure, a small band of Dragonfire riders and four horses made the long trek to the breathtaking beauty of Kalispell.

We were immediately overwhelmed with the scope of the Rebecca Farm Team. Attention to detail was certainly at the top of the list, and this was true for the facility, the management and the fantastic hospitality. There just isn't enough praise for

a show that provides free ice for over 600 horses and their people for an entire week!

We were also treated to top rides from the country's best, including WEG and Olympic Team members. The facility is perfectly laid out for the spectator, so we missed none of the action as Phillip Dutton, Karen O'Connor and Buck Davidson duked it out for the top slots in the Three Star. I was thrilled as Karen and Mandiba (my Baby Jade's big bro) lead all the way from Dressage through Stadium to be pinned the winners. These performances were so fantastic for our team to watch, truly inspirational.

And, as if THAT weren't enough, Team DF had very strong performances that put us at the head of our classes! Unfortunately for Devyn Rau, she was not able to complete on her Mushu the Dragon, as he had some filling in a leg that made her stay out of the cross country competition. A very wise decision, indeed. But out of the remaining three horses, we had two first place finishes and a second.

Earl McFall was focused and accurate in his Dressage test with Natalie Jensen's Wrigley, to score a 27 and slide into second place. Earl's prowess on the tough cross country course really shined through and gained him the first place advantage going into the last day after a fast and clear round. On Stadium day he was well ahead, and even with a rail, he was able to keep his lead to win the Open Training A division.

My own High Times has been a force to reckon with in the Training Horse division, and in this Open Training D class in Montana, things were no different. His 28 in Dressage had him right at the top of the division in fourth place. After the most challenging cross country course of his career, "Billy" moved up to second with an exhilarating fault-free round. With yet another clear round under the time in Stadium, Billy moved into the first place slot to become the winner.

Merissa Underwood and her new mare, Danny California, make quite the stunning pair as they are both equally thin and feminine. Looks aside, they are both strong competitors who were focused throughout the competition. After an average score in Dressage, the duo focused on moving up. With speed and confidence, they mastered to Training level cross country course and added no more penalties to their score. Neither one crumbled with the pressure of the third day, and were rock solid in the Stadium for a clear round. This was no easy feat, as they were one of the few to do so! After it was all said and done, this new partnership gain the second place ribbon, and all of the great prizes that went with it, in the Junior Training A.

What a fantastic time we had competing our wonderful horses in one of the most picturesque environments imaginable. This destination will be a highlight of our 2010 show season.. and hopefully many more to come!

This year's Boot Camp at Eventful Acres was filled with learning, laughing, and having fun! Of course, we all expect to learn some new skills under the intensive lesson schedule at Boot Camp, but I think that it is the latter part of laughing and having fun (sometimes well into the night!) that draws the campers to Oregon House every year in July.

We would like to thank ALL of the campers for exceeding our expectations in your lessons, the improvement was impressive. And also for the camaraderie and the chance to get to know you better. Aside from the spectacular Monty Awards, we also have a few more awards to mention.

The judges have voted and The 2010 End of Camp Awards go as follows:

The Most Improved Camper is Makena Graber. This was her very first time out on cross country, as well as her horse's, and by the end of camp they were both looking like pros.

The Best Dressed Camper is Merissa Underwood. Her attention to detail and neatness is much appreciated.

The Most Adventurous Camper is Kammy Bhala. Not only did she rock The Monty Challenge bareback, but she also went off the rope swing at the lake. What a lady!

The Sportsmanship Award goes to Natalie Jensen. Her friendly support of the other campers' progress made all feel great.

2010 was a year to remember as we all "Aimed High". We eagerly look forward to next year's Dragonfire Boot Camp and the memories that will be made there!

2010 Far West Was Far Out!

The 2010 Far West Regional Championship was a great success for Dragonfire. The many victory passes taken by Team Dragonfire are a credit to the high quality horses we are fortunate to work with and a fantastic group of staff, friends, and clients. We would like to thank the show management for all of their hospitality and hard work, asa great deal of fun was had by all, and we look forward to returning in 2011.

n ever, and is certainly a contender for a World title this year. "Faye" is the most stunning of beauties, and is always willing to give 110% in every performance. Ridden by Jennifer McFall and owned by Antonia Casados, her efforts were awarded at this show with a win in both Ladies Hunter Pleasure

and the Open Mares Hunter Pleasure before her Reserve Championship in the Ladies Hunter Pleasure.

In her debut performance, Taylor McFall shined in the Walk/Trot division with her partner, Iron Forge Aire Command. With great enthusiasm, Taylor entered the ring with style (thanks to Marsha De Arriaga!), grace and confidence. Taylor and "Ace" were ultimately named the Walk/Jog 11 and Under Western Pleasure Reserve Champions.

Rosy Outlook, by Dragonfire Kirin and out of a Holiday Compadre daughter, made her saddle debut at the Far West Regional with Earl McFall in the irons. As her breeding would suggest, she was all business as she won both the Dressage Suitability Under Saddle and the Three Year Old Hunter Pleasure class. Owned by Dragonfire Farm, "Rosy" has been UNDEFEATED in her career, with only blues to her name in three different divisions: In Hand, Hunter Pleasure and Dressage.

Dragonfire Timeless (Minion Millennium

x Raintree Ala Bella)

will most certainly

have a timeless appeal in the show ring. He is tall, stretchy, and a big mover that comes strongly off all four. Combined with his smooth gaits and focused performance, "Timmy" is absolutely irresistible. An entry of the Dragonfire Farm, Timeless was named the Far West Junior Hunter Pleasure Champion with Jennifer McFall riding.

Not pictured, but no less impressive, was Barbara Fleming aboard her own, Alias. Barbara and Alias bested the the others in the Dressage ring with two winning rides in Second Level. These two have been working really hard for this move up, and her scores proved that the hard work paid off!

Another very exciting youngster is Melissa and Michael Votaw's Miss Ruby Slippers. Bred in the purple, "Ruby" is by Grand Cru Beaujolais and out of Carlyena, a Carlyle Command daughter and producer of World Champions such as Rampage. In her debut, Ruby turned several heads and inspired many compliments as she won the Three Year Old Western Pleasure with Melissa Votaw aboard. Underwood Claims Top Honors

Terina Underwood, remained cool at The Shepherd Ranch Horse Trials to win the Novice Rider division despite the pressure of going into Stadium in first place. Moving up to first after mastering the tough cross country course without penalty aboard The Dark Knight, Terina had less than a rail separating her from second place going into the final phase of stadium jumping. Not letting the pressure bother her, she put in a double clear round for the win, much to the delight of her family and the DF Team. Way to go Terina!!

Student of the Month: Megan Watkins

I am particularly proud of this young rider. She has a great work ethic and focuses every emotion into her riding. She started out as a hesitant rider and had a hard time trusting the horses. After a lot of hard work, dedication, and Khan, she has shown me that she is one of my intermediate riders. She can get her horse completely ready for a lesson. Including; putting the bridle on and saddling with no help at all! She is also already cantering in her lessons.

She is always ready to ride with the appropriate riding gear, and her hair neatly back. I never have to remind her to wear her gloves or get her hair out of her eyes: tidy = style for Megan. Her attention to detail is refreshing and it is a complete joy to have her as my student.

To sum up Megan, I would have to say, "Clean boots, a can-do attitude, and a smile."
